What is a HEPA filter?

A HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a type of air filter that meets the HEPA filter standard of removing at least 99.97% of particles from the air down to 0.3 microns in size. They are commonly found in air purifies, which help to filter the air in order to clean it. Other types of air purifiers include ionizers, carbon filter and non-filter purifiers.

How does a HEPA filter work?

A HEPA filter is designed as a pleated mechanical air filter that has a sizeable amount of thickness to be able to capture particulates through the pleats, that are arranged randomly to create a foundation of fibres. The dense and random arrangement of these fibres helps to catch a variety of particle sizes including, dust, mould, pollen, bacteria, and any airborne particles. As these particles pass through the HEPA filter, they are caught by four different mechanisms:

  • Sieving
  • Interception
  • Diffusion
  • Internal impaction

Industries that require HEPA filters

There are many industries and places where HEPA filters are used when requiring contamination control. These include;

  • Manufacturing
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Semiconductors
  • Food & beverage
  • Vehicles
  • Homes
  • Hospitals

Advantages of using a HEPA filter

There are many advantages of using a HEPA filter across a variety of places and industries. These include:

Allergy relief

Air purification can help to reduce allergies from dust, exhaust and factory fumes by filtering them out. This provides relief to any allergy sufferers, particularly those prone to asthma.

Mitigate spread of infections

By filtering and purifying air particles, a HEPA filter can reduce the risk of spreading any infections and potentially prevent them.

Improves wellness and productivity

Cleaner air and increased ventilation allows employees to work more productively compared to the risk of employees struggling to breath and overtime, causing any long-term side health issues. This is especially important for workers in a factory with fumes and harmful substances present. Not only does this benefit employees, employers will also benefit from having fewer workers off work due to sickness.
