Are formaldehyde fumes dangerous?

Formaldehyde is a volatile organic compound (VOC), that is flammable at room temperature. It can be produced naturally in small amounts in the human body, as well as occurring naturally in fruits and some food produce. However, these levels are unlikely to cause harm.

Formaldehyde is noticeable from its strong odour and should be handled carefully. Exposure can be dangerous and produce various health symptoms, depending on the method and concentration of exposure.

The dangers of formaldehyde fumes

Depending on the level and method of exposure to formaldehyde as well as its carcinogenic properties, formaldehyde can cause the following:

  • Skin irritation
  • Irritation to the nose, mouth and throat
  • Nausea, headaches and vomiting
  • Irritation, stinging, burning and tearing of the eyes

How can a fume extraction system help?

For products that are known to release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) in the form of fumes, all chemicals must be disposed (rather than disposed do we have controlled, managed or is this from the COSHH website)  in accordance to the COSHH (Control of Substances Hazard to Health) Regulations 2002.

As well as using the correct protective equipment when working with and disposing of formaldehyde, sufficient ventilation and fume extraction is required to prevent fume build up. At Purex, we recommend using the 800 model Digital 800 2 – Purex International Ltd . The fully automatic functions, adjustable airflow as well as the gas and particle sensors makes this ideal for use in salons and laboratories.
