What is formaldehyde fumes?

Formaldehyde is a colourless, flammable and highly toxic chemical with a strong odour. It is  mainly used in the production of building materials as well as domestic products, including:

Are formaldehyde fumes dangerous?

Formaldehyde is a volatile organic compound (VOC), that is flammable at room temperature. It can be produced naturally in small amounts in the human body, as well as occurring naturally in fruits and some food produce. However, these levels are unlikely to cause harm.

Formaldehyde is noticeable from its strong odour and should be handled carefully. Exposure can be dangerous and produce various health symptoms, depending on the method and concentration of exposure.

The dangers of formaldehyde fumes

Depending on the level and method of exposure to formaldehyde as well as its carcinogenic properties, formaldehyde can cause the following:

  • Skin irritation
  • Irritation to the nose, mouth and throat
  • Nausea, headaches and vomiting
  • Irritation, stinging, burning and tearing of the eyes
