Fume Extraction for the Aerospace Industry

Our fume extraction systems are built to meet the demands of the aerospace industry.

From welding to chemical bonding, our clean air machines are designed to minimise exposure to flux fumes and particulate matter, keeping your operators safe and productivity high. Combining reliability, efficiency, and HSE compliance, we help businesses across the world create and maintain safe working environments for complex aerospace applications.

Typical Applications

Airframe Fabrication

A key manufacturing process for countless industries, welding plays a pivotal role in airframe fabrication. Utilising aluminium and titanium for optimal strength and durability, welding aircrafts can present serious health hazards.

Ranging from metal fume fever to permanent lung-damage, the inhalation of aluminium and titanium dusts can cause long-term health conditions for engineers. As a result, we’ve designed our fume extraction machines to meet the varying demands of aerospace welding processes, extracting particles as small as 0.3 microns.

Composite Manufacturing

An essential process within aerospace engineering, composite manufacturing ensures aircrafts are lightweight, maximising performance whilst reducing fuel consumption. Whilst highly advantageous, the use of a range of carbon and glass fibre composites also presents health risks to engineers and operators.

From skin irritation and respiratory risks, sufficient ventilation is required to also prevent component contamination, equipment failure or damage and mitigate the risk of combustion.

Surface Treatments

From abrasive blasting to conversion coating, surface treatments are essential when manufacturing highly durable, corrosion-resistant aerospace components.  However, each process presents a unique hazard to surface engineers.

Whether combatting metallic dust or acid vapours, we have clean air solutions that meet the complex and varying demands of manufacturing processes within the aerospace industry.

FAQs

There are various aerospace manufacturing processes that benefit from dedicated fume extraction, including, but not limited to:

By extracting airborne particulates and VOCs produced by aerospace manufacturing processes, businesses can minimise the risk of contaminants:

  • Interfering with the durability of vital bonds and adhesives.
  • Reducing the accuracy of precision processes like CNC machining and laser marking.
  • Impacting the quality of surface finishes.

In turn, they benefit from improved production quality and productivity rates with lesser risk of downtime and costly repairs.

COSHH and HSE guidelines state that general ventilation is not enough to mitigate the risks associated with chemical and welding applications. Instead, a Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) system must be commissioned to manage exposure limits for dust, fumes and VOCs either produced or disrupted during aerospace manufacturing processes.
